Rene Russo is the daughter of Shirley Balocca who was a barmaid employed in a factory and Nino Russo. The birth of her daughter was July 25, 1970 at Burbank California. Rene's father, a mechanic and sculptor, left the family around the age of two. She was raised by her mother Rene and her sister Toni alone. Her father was of Italian roots and her mother was Italian and German with Irish ancestry. Rene's scoliosis became so serious that she had to wear a torso brace for the entire time during her Junior High School years. Jolly Green Giant, her classmates' nickname, came from her because of her tall height. While she was a student at Burroughs High School alongside Ron Howard (a fellow classmate), even with her brace removed she felt as an isolated Ranger. Rene left school in the tenth grade because she was not able to handle her academics or being social with her classmates. To make ends meet she took on a number of part time jobs for about 18 months. Most of them were paid. In a movie theatre, she was given free tickets to films. At a restaurant she received free meals. It was common for her to work 2 jobs at a time. Her last job which was solely for the paycheck was working full-time in an eyeglass manufacturing plant, which was responsible for checking contact lenses.
